Mancos River. Head to
Cortez, "Gateway" to the Archaeological Heart of
Mesa Verde Country", home to trading posts specializing in authentic
handmade native arts and crafts.
No visit to Southwest Colorado is complete without stopping at
Mesa Verde
National Park, named by National Geographic Traveler as one of the "50
Places of a Lifetime" to visit, where there is plenty of fun for the whole family. Try
a scenic mountain drive up to the quaint little mining town of
Rico and
visit their historic cemetery.
Spend the night in
Dolores, do some antiquing, check out railroad
history's famed Galloping Goose and the unique homes in the town. Outside
Dolores, the
Anasazi Heritage Center Museum
is home to more than a million
artifacts from local archaeology, as well as traveling monthly exhibits.
McPhee Lake and Recreation area, the second largest body of water in
Colorado, is perfect for a romantic dinner and a tour by boat at sunset.
If you enjoy fishing, get ready for some of the best fly-fishing in
Colorado! Catch a rainbow or brown trout on the Dolores River near
Stoner.
The Summit Ridge area has beautiful Ponderosa pines and several
recreational lakes - check out the bass and the catfish. Heading
northwest, you'll find Gold Medal catch and release fly-fishing on the
Dolores River near the small towns of
Egnar,
Lewis,
Cahone,
Pleasant View
and
Dove Creek.
The gorgeous terrain, ranging from canyon land to farmland, is world famous
for producing delicious Anasazi beans, a perfect souvenir for your trip.
This whole area is bordered by
San Juan National Forest - thousands of
acres of public land. Plenty of hiking, camping, mountain biking, and
horseback riding. Add to this the natural beauty of aspens, pines, and oak
brush and we're sure you'll agree -- Southwest Colorado has fun and
recreation for the entire family!
